FFK and MCB Take First Step Toward More Sustainable FootballMatches in Curaçao

417 Kilograms of Recyclable Materials Collected During CONCACAF Nations League Home Matches

Willemstad, Curaçao – October 6, 2026 – The Curaçao Football Federation (FFK) and Maduro & Curiel’s Bank (MCB) have jointly implemented their first sustainability initiative during Curaçao’s CONCACAF Nations League home matches against Nicaragua on September 27, 2026, and Trinidad & Tobago on October 1, 2026. Through this initiative, both organizations have taken a concrete step toward making football matches in Curaçao more sustainable.

As part of this pilot project, a recycling program was established behind the scenes, focusing on the separate collection of recyclable materials generated by stadium operations. The program was carried out by Statera Earth, which was responsible for collecting, sorting, and reporting the results.

During the two matches, a total of 417 kilograms of recyclable materials were collected:

  • 195 kilograms of plastic
  • 147 kilograms of glass
  • 75 kilograms of aluminum

With approximately 7,485 spectators per match and nearly 15,000 spectators attending both Nations League matches combined, an average of 27.8 grams of recyclable material per spectator was diverted from the general waste stream.

A First Measurable Step

For FFK, this initiative marks the beginning of a broader commitment to sustainability within Curaçao football. The pilot was intentionally designed on a small scale to gain practical experience, identify operational processes, and establish an initial measurable baseline. The results provide a concrete starting point for expanding future initiatives and gaining a better understanding of the environmental impact of football matches, particularly in the area of waste management.

Worldwide, organizations such as FIFA and UEFA are placing increasing emphasis on sustainability, the circular economy, and responsible waste management at sporting events. With this first pilot project, FFK aligns itself with these developments and reinforces its ambition to be a modern and socially responsible football organization.

“This collaboration with MCB represents an important first step for FFK. The results demonstrate that even a relatively small-scale pilot can deliver an immediate and measurable impact. At the same time, we see this primarily as a starting point. In the coming years, we aim to further integrate sustainability into our matches and events.”

Moving Toward the Next Phase

The experience gained through this initiative will serve as the foundation for the further development of sustainability initiatives within Curaçao football.

FFK, MCB, and Statera Earth are already discussing potential next steps ahead of the CONCACAF Nations League Quarterfinals in November, exploring opportunities to expand sustainability efforts and actively involve spectators in recycling and waste separation in the future.

With nearly 15,000 spectators attending the two matches, this initial pilot has demonstrated that football can serve as a powerful platform for raising awareness about sustainability while delivering measurable results.

FFK extends its sincere appreciation to MCB for making this initiative possible and to Statera Earth for the professional execution of the recycling program.

FFK also thanks all staff members, volunteers, and partners who contributed to the success of this first initiative.

A first step toward more sustainable football matches in Curaçao.
